spring flowers

There's something I like about Spring; I wouldn't say it's my favorite season, but I like the energy of it.  As if the world is waking up and we get to breathe fresh air again.  There's also the thrill of finishing the indoor projects and starting to plan the garden.  This is our garden list so far:

  • pie pumpkins
  • zucchini
  • eggplant
  • cucumbers (I will definitely be freezing some again - they were really good)
  • pickling cucumbers
  • tomatoes (lots including heirloom varieties)
  • carrots
  • spinach
  • lettuce
  • peas
  • basil
  • green beans

Some of that list was at the request of Daughter and I won't lie, I'm very excited about her joining in the gardening.  She always avoided it because she hated getting dirty, but this year she discovered mud pies and with that came the revelation that dirty isn't always a bad thing.

Before and After - Desk Edition

desk before

When Husband took a job working from home we knew we had to set up an office for him in a room that had a door.  We chose the bedroom.  He also decided that he wanted the desk that we shared.  Sharing worked perfectly before he had to sit at it for 8 hours a day, so off we went to find a new desk.  As luck would have it around the same time, I found out about this used furniture store in the area called Jubilee.  We took a drive and hoped for the best.

desk before 2

What we found was this desk (and a couch, but that's another story).  Perfect size, sturdy construction, lots of drawers for my sewing needs, and an amazing price.  It was a bit dated, but I knew I could fix that.  This all happened last December.  I'd been making do with it the way it was because of that pesky season we call Winter.  I didn't want to have to paint inside with children surrounding me.  This week that all changed along with the weather.  Perfect weather to paint in and perfect weather for the paint to dry in.

desk after 2

I love it now.  The light grey paint really lightened it up and it fits in better with the white shelves. It also matches my sewing machine quite well which I hadn't noticed until now.  I got the knobs at my favorite place to buy pretty yet overpriced hardware, Anthropologie.  They add just the right splash of color and turned out to be perfectly sized (it's so hard to tell the size online).

I'd put off filling up all the drawers since I knew I was going to be painting it, but soon they will all be filled with floss, bobbins, and scissors (my kids stay out of the drawers - safety first).

It's a trap!

leprauchan trap

brother trouble

Last Friday Daughter came home from school with wild dreams of catching a Leprechaun and keeping his gold (I told her she had to share).  Because we firmly believe in using what we already have (and because this Mama was unwilling to take 2 kids to the stores) she put together a trap of her own.  You can't tell, but in the barn under the piece of paper is a yoga card.  She was using that to lure in the Leprachaun; I was told Leprechauns can't resist yoga and love it as much as she does.  The paper was to trap him in the barn.  Once the Leprechaun was caught between the paper and the yoga card the doors of the barn would automatically shut.

Come morning when she actually had to grab the Leprechaun she could suck it out of the barn with the Leprechaun sucker upper.  Everything was going to go really well since she had been practicing, but then her brother came along.  Apparently it's not just a Leprechaun trap.

She actually spent the night at her Grandparent's house on Saturday so no Leprechaun trapping happened here.  It did happen there though.  She built a trap with her Grandpa and in the morning there were gold coins and a fake Leprechaun beard.  Her classroom also caught a Leprechaun that knocked over some paint and left footprints.  She was so excited she's still talking about it and I'm left marvelling over how wonderous childhood is.

WIP* Wednesday

A Hobbes for Son (whose name is not Calvin, although that would have been a good guess). Husband can't understand why I want a Hobbes for Son, so I just said why wouldn't I?  He had no good answer.  I sewed the legs to the side (the instructions just said to sew them) so that when he is held up the legs go straight and the stripes line up.  That's just how I liked it best.  I also used some pellets for the bottom of the body and legs.  I thought about using rice, but I'm a little afraid this could get left outside in a puddle and then there would be mold.

The Balletomane is coming along.  The opening between the two needles will be the underarm.  I'm working on the yoke (above the arm) and then it will be joining them back together for the front.  This is just half of the back.  I'm a little nervous it's going to be too small for her, but I know the back is supposed to be short.  I'm trying not to freak out, rip all of it back, and start on a larger size.  My gauge is good and so far it's all measuring as it should.  Fingers crossed.

Beware kids*

Hello Princess Leia.  How tiny and adorable do you look today?  But whatever could you be staring at in the distance?

It's a blue elephant!  Is he a part of the rebel army?  Since when are elephants blue?

Since when do bunnies have mustaches?  Oh Princess Leia, did you find these on an island somewhere?  Possibly one of misfit toys?  Because that would mean you're in the wrong movie.

The boring stuff:

Princess Leia pattern

Elephant pattern

Senor Mustache pattern

Notes for all of them can be found on my ravelry.

Saturday was a bust.  We're going to pretend that for the sake of saving this weekend it didn't exist.  It was full of crank and missed parties.  But Sunday, that awesome day of warmth.  We liked Sunday.  No, we loved Sunday.  No one was cranky, grilling was done, friends were over (both Daughters and ours), early birthday gifts were ridden, and lawns were pretended to be mowed.  It's the kind of day we think of when Summer is mentioned and we had to remind ourselves that it's only Spring.

Speaking of this weather I'm itching to plant.  We're forcing ourselves to finish an inside project first though.  I also keep reminding myself that we're not out of the clear for a hard frost.  It has been such a warm winter and the weather is so nice right now that it's easy to forget that. Although I hope that the snow is done for the season, I wouldn't be surprised if we got one last storm.  Winters way of saying goodbye.

Can you believe last week in this space was a snowman?

Day 13: sign #marchphotoaday

Hello neighborhood.

Sometimes we all just need a walk around the neighborhood (ducks included).  Oh, how I hope this is the real spring, although I know that more likely than not we'll have another cold spell.  It's not quite time to plant seeds or put out all the plants.  Soon enough there will be peas, lettuce, and green beans.  And before long it will be full on summer and I won't want to leave the air conditioning.  So I will enjoy this whether it's fake spring or the real spring.

WIP* Wednesday

mr. mustache

I have named him Mr. Mustache and when he is finished you will understand why.  Right now he's just kind of a blob with one ear.

The Balletomane.  The construction is unique and I don't quite understand how it's all going to work out, but the pattern had me at the word seamless.  Daughter picked out the color and I was a bit shocked that it is neither pink nor purple.  She's growing up.

front of mangyle

The front of the Mangyle.  So far so good, I'm using bobbins so that I don't have to try to untangle three balls of yarn.  I'm probably also carrying more yarn over than I should be, but nobody sees the inside except Husband.  I enjoy a good challenge, but truly, I'm all about not making myself go crazy when knitting.

the cute

Yesterday on Facebook I promised the cute and I deliver.  I might be biased since I crocheted them though.  Daughter particularly likes the mushroom and has named it the Mario mushroom. Patterns by Ana Paula Rimoli from her book Amigurumi Two.

leftover oatmeal muffins

leftover oatmeal muffins

leftover oatmeal muffins

leftover oatmeal muffins

While Son lounged around in his parents bed (which is obviously the best place to lounge around in), Daughter and I made muffins.  I saw the recipe on and I just happened to have all of the ingredients including a mason jar of frozen blueberries that was lost in the back of the freezer.  These muffins were amazing, moist with just the right amount of chewiness, and just the right amount of sweetness without needing butter.  Plus it used up my leftover oatmeal.

Almost weekly I make a big pot of steel cut oats.  And by the end of the week there's about a cup left because my family is no longer excited about oatmeal (even though they will be excited for it once again come Monday).  So now I have a use for that leftover oatmeal and I think there are even some more blueberries left.  I should warn you, these muffins go fast.  The whole dozen was gone by Sunday evening.

And in case anyone wondered, the sweater Daughter's wearing was the first sweater I ever made. It was supposed to be a size 2; it fit her well enough to wear by the age of 3 and at the age of 6 it fits her really well.  This is through no fault of the designer, but instead the blame laid on my lack of knowledge about substituting yarns.

2 snowmen

Everyone Poops

  • I need to find more balance.  It's okay to knit for myself and my family as well as The White Rabbit Gallery.
  • That one day I will wish Son would be quiet instead of wishing I could understand him.
  • One day my house will be all too quiet.
  • I may not be able to get rid of the negative people in my life, but I can give them less power.
  • One day the old lady whispering hush in Goodnight Moon will no longer be called Mommy.
  • Husband loves me whether his sweater is finished in a timely manner or not.
  • I need to take care of myself as well as my family.
